Last of the Last: An exceptionally rare 1992 Peugeot 505 SW8 Wagon, representing one of the final Peugeot passenger vehicles produced for the U.S. market. Finished in Blanc Meije (White) over a Mouse Grey velour interior, this SW8 features three rows of seating, comfortably accommodating up to eight passengers. Power comes from Peugeot's durable 2.2-liter naturally aspirated Douvrin inline four-cylinder gasoline engine, part of the legendary family of engines jointly developed by PSA Peugeot Citroën and Renault during the 1970s and 1980s. Featuring a single overhead camshaft (SOHC) with two valves per cylinder and electronic fuel injection, it produces 120 horsepower at 5,000 rpm and 131 lb-ft of torque at 3,500 rpm. Renowned for its durability, mechanical simplicity, and smooth operation, the Douvrin engine perfectly complements the ride quality and refinement that made the Peugeot 505 one of Europe's most respected touring cars. This exceptionally well-preserved example has traveled just 87,800 miles, ... likely reflecting decades of careful ownership and stewardship. The "SW8" model designation represents: station wagon for eight passengers. The Peugeot 505 earned an international reputation for its exceptional ride quality, robust engineering, confident road manners, and outstanding long-distance comfort. The versatile SW8 wagon expanded upon those strengths by offering generous cargo capacity and genuine eight-passenger seating, making it one of the most practical and capable European wagons of its era. Very popular outside the Americas, world wide Peugeot 505 models were produced in huge numbers. Production spanned from 1978 to 1992 where a total of 1,351,254 Peugeot 505 units were manufactured in France. The 505 wagon models only represented about 5.5% of that total. In the Spring of 1989, after graduating from college, Ken worked for a multi-franchised dealership in Bountiful, Utah. In addition to Nissan, Buick, GMC, BMW and Lotus, the campus also housed the states only Peugeot franchise. While new and used Peugeot inventory was small, the 505 models in stock were really nice cars. I was struck by the comfortable seats, pleasurable ride quality and great European steering feel. Despite these positive features, the cars were difficult to sell and received very little attention or showroom traffic. Do not knock it until you have tried it. Peugeot built wonderful cars, that just did not translate well to the American market. The 505 line up also included a 4 cyl. turbo gas model, a more powerful V6 STX model, as well as turbo-diesel offerings. This wagon is the base model, with a 4 cyl. non-turbo gasoline engine. Peugeot Motors of America Inc. officially withdrew from the U.S. market in August 1991. During the 1991 model year, Peugeot sold just 748 examples of the 505—sedans and wagons combined—in the United States. The 1992 model year 505s were the last of the last - "perhaps" even being produced following Peugeot's departure from the American market? This makes them among the very last U.S.-specification Peugeot passenger cars ever produced and some of the rarest examples in existence. Ok, I think this is an amazing piece of automotive history as I was in my late 20's then - and followed this as it happened real time. Ten years earlier, I had followed with my eyes wide open when British-Leyland Triumph left the U.S. They waved goodbye in October 1981, giving us the amazing Triumph TR8 on the way out the door. Triumph TR8 production lasted until 1982 model year. This 505 wagon was assembled at Peugeot's historic Sochaux, France, manufacturing facility—the company's flagship plant and the birthplace of countless iconic Peugeot automobiles. For collectors and enthusiasts, the 1992 Peugeot 505 SW8 represents the end of an era—one of the final chapters in Peugeot's history in the American market and an extraordinarily uncommon survivor.
